Can you tell me a brief history about your business?
In 1996 my son and I started Norris Heating and Air installing and servicing units in our local area.
Why did you start your own business?
I wanted a business to pass down from generation to generation.
What challenges did you face when you first started your business (i.e. permits, license)?
We obtained licenses for HVAC, Refrigeration, and Electrical. Acquiring contracts and getting our names know was the hardest task.
What risks did you take and what where the outcomes?
A huge financial risk but it paid off in about 3 or 4 years.
What are your short term goals for your business?
My goal is to retire and help my son continue to grow the business for his family.
Does the market affect your business and how?
The housing market drives our business. If houses aren’t being built then HVAC sale go down.
What recent problems have you encountered with your business, and how did you overcome them.
The housing market crash in 2008 cut our income by half because we lost many contracts. We managed to stay afloat on servicing existing unit since then.
What distinguishes you from the competition?
Family business, honesty, fair pricing in our community is what distinguishes us from the competition.
Will you ever expand to multiple locations?
No we would like to remain small and local to maintain the family owned and operated atmosphere.
Please describe your typical day?
I wake up between 8 – 10 am, eat breakfast, watch TV, and just relax unless I’m needed.
