Interview with G. Quayle Neslen, M.D.  Founder of Sylva Orthopedics

  1. Q:  Tell us a little about yourself.  Where did you study medicine?                                            A:      I was born in Dallas, Texas, and I was raised in Whittier, CA.  I graduated from the same high school Richard Nixon did.  I went to college at Stanford University for my undergraduate, and then I attended graduate school for one year, worked for a year, and then decided to pursue medical school.  I graduated medical school at George Washington University in Washington D.C.

2. Q:  What factors led you to the decision to open a practice in Sylva, NC?                                A: The hospital was looking an orthopedic surgeon, and my wife and I were looking for a smaller community as opposed to a larger city.  I did my internship after medical school at LA county hospital, and my residency at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA.  My wife and I had decided we wanted a town smaller than Atlanta and did not want to go back to California.  I also liked the idea of being in a place that truly needed my services.  Sylva had no orthopedic program at all before the foundation of Sylva Orthopedics.

Interview with Russ Parrish, Owner of Parrish Landscaping

Russ, before we start I would like to Thanks you for taking the time to sit down with me to find out more about yourself and your company, Parrish Landscaping.

Q1) Russ, Start off by giving me a brief overview of yourself?
A1) To start, I graduated from NC State University with a Degree in Agricultural Business Management and Biological Science, with a minor in Economics. This is where I really found my passion for horticulture and explaining my small grass cutting business. I started out many years ago with a push mower, a weed eater and a blower. Now I have a very profitable business with a lot more overhead and equipment.

Q2) How did you set up your company?
A2) I basically set my company up very cautiously, testing the market before investing too much capital. I used what I had and worked on the side at first, but once I saw the customers where pleased with my work and were recommending me to other people, I began making my company “more legitimate.” I bought new equipment, invested in insurance, spent money on marketing ideas.

Interview with Kelly Laughter, owner of Fletcher Grading

1. Tell us about yourself.
I am a General Contractor licensed in Highway, Public Utilities and Building

2. Why did you open up a grading business?
Our company began in 1995 as a landscaping company and transitioned into a grading company around 2001. Our focus changed because of increased demand from our customers for grading and excavating services.

3. What are Pros of owning your own business?
You get to be the decision maker. Also it is very rewarding to look at a finished project and know that your company is responsible for it.
